Berrynarbor Emergency Plan

Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting on 20th November.
We had some excellent discussions about the new Emergency Plan, focusing on risks, impacts, and possible mitigations.

The plan is intended to guide the Parish Council in identifying the immediate actions to take during and in the aftermath of an emergency. These steps aim to support the community and reduce negative impacts until further assistance is available.

While there is no statutory requirement for Berrynarbor Parish Council to produce an emergency plan, North Devon County Council (NDCC) encourages parishes to consider how they would respond to an emergency and to record this in a Community Emergency Plan.

We are currently drafting and reviewing the first version. If you were unable to attend the meeting but would like to be involved, please contact: clerk@berrynarborparishcouncil.org.uk

Berrynarbor

Nestled between Ilfracombe and Combe Martin, the village of Berrynarbor sits within the West Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, surrounded by steeply wooded valleys and rich in charm. Renowned for its floral displays and community spirit, Berrynarbor has proudly earned multiple Britain in Bloom Awards and Best Kept Village accolades.

The village is home to a Parish Church, a Primary School, a Pre-School, a well-loved Community Shop and Post Office, and the Manor Hall—a vibrant hub for local events and gatherings. Berrynarbor offers a range of tourist accommodation and scenic campsites throughout the Parish.

Families enjoy two dedicated Play Areas: one for younger children beside the Manor Hall, and another for ages 6–14 in the Playing Field off Pitt Hill. A designated dog walking area is accessible from the Playing Field entrance, and those seeking tranquility can visit Claude’s Garden, a peaceful retreat reached via Barton Lane.

St Peter’s Church stands as a testament to the village’s heritage, featuring a 15th-century tower, a 17th-century lychgate, and a Norman font.

The picturesque Sterridge Valley winds through the village, its stream flowing gently into the Bristol Channel—adding to the natural beauty that makes Berrynarbor so special.

Watermouth

Watermouth is within the Parish and has a sheltered harbour directly beneath Watermouth Castle (a Grade II listed country house). Watermouth Castle was built in the 19th century by the Bassett family who were Lords of the Manor. Prior to that, in the 17th Century, the Berrie family were Lords of the Manor, and at that time the Manor was called 'Berrie Nerbert'. The Castle is now a popular holiday attraction.
